Everybody wants even, clear and radiant skin, right? but the skin color is determined by the amount of melanin present in the skin, that is, the more melanin you have, the darker your skin.

Who remembers the old saying?

‘The darker the berry, the sweeter the juice’ This saying has nothing to do with the fruit, and everything to do with the color of your skin.

It encourages us to appreciate our melanin no matter the level.

Let’s talk about skin lightening, Shall we?

Skin lightening products work by reducing the melanin pigment present in the skin. Lightening products can be gotten over-the-counter or by prescription and,  wrong products can scar the skin, causing life-threatening problems.

This is why it is necessary to check the ingredients on the products before applying them to your skin.

Ingredients like hydroquinone, mercury, Paraben, steroids, resorcinol, monobenzone, phthalates, triclosan and MIT(methylisothiazolinone) are commonly found in lightening products. They have shown to pose harmful and severe health problems when used for long stretches at a time.

However, hydroquinone can be used safely under medical supervision, for a short period of time, but the problems arise when it is used over a long period of time.

Other side effects of skin lightening include:

  • Kidney failure
  • Skin infections
  • Skin cancer
  • Skin discoloration
  • Chronic wounds
  • Stretch marks

Here at the WE, our approach to beauty is integral and our goal is to maintain the beautiful skin we are born with.

Always remember, your black is beautiful!
