The first step to knowing what’s harmful to your skin is knowing and understanding your skin type. This will guide you on what products or techniques work best for your skin.

There are five major skin types which are;

  • Normal Skin
  • Dry Skin
  • Oily Skin
  • Combination skin
  • Sensitive Skin

However, for every skin type, there are certain things you shouldn’t do to yours. Here are five absolutely important skincare habits.

  • Exfoliating too often– While exfoliating may keep your skin glowing, it is imperative to not overdo this skincare step. We know it can get quite addictive but too much exfoliation can lead to dryness and inflammation while stripping away natural oils.
  • Applying Acne medication all over your face– As the name implies, acne medication should only be applied directly on acne spots rather than all over the face. Applying acne medication all over the face may cause overproduction of oil, which may eventually lead to more breakouts.
  • Picking your face– It’s not advisable to pick at pimples, blackheads or whiteheads. Picking pimples may inadvertently force all the debris from the pore deeper into the follicle. That can cause the follicle wall to rupture, spilling all the infected material into the dermis, the lower layer of skin.
  • Using too many skincare products– With skincare, less is always more. Always try to limit the number of skincare products you use especially on your face because each product has 10 or 20 ingredients, so if you use 10 products [on your skin] that’s potentially 100 ingredients. YIKES!
  • Clean your brushes regularly– This one can be difficult to do regularly, but you only need to clean your makeup brushes once a month. Deep cleaning your brushes will help get rid of the harmful bacteria on the brushes that come from your skin—from sweat and dead skin cells—and the bacteria that comes from makeup products.

Following these simple steps would make a significant difference in the appearance of your skin. What other extreme skincare habits do you think needs to stop.
