Cancer is one of the leading causes of death globally. World Cancer Day is celebrated every 4th of February and it aims to save millions by raising awareness on the Cancer endemic – its prevention, detection, and treatment.

What is Cancer?
Cancer is a disease that results when cells grow abnormally and spread to other parts of the body. It can occur at any age and if not detected early, it can be life-threatening.
This year, the theme “I Am and I Will” acknowledges that everyone can address the global cancer burden, raise a collective voice and take action.

In commemoration of this day, here are a few tips to help prevent cancer:

  • Exercise regularly

Research shows that regular exercise can help prevent cancer as well as help people undergoing cancer treatment.

  • Avoid smoking

Smoking is the number one cause of lung cancer. Not only does smoking cigarettes cause cancer but it also blocks the body from fighting it by weakening the immune system making it harder to kill cancer cells.

  • Breastfeeding for nursing mothers

Mothers who breastfeed lower their risk of pre- and post-menopausal breast cancer. Breastfeeding reduces exposure to hormones such as estrogen which can increase cancer risk

  • Limit alcohol intake

Drinking alcohol raises the risk of some cancers. The less alcohol you drink, the lower the risk of cancer.

  • Eat healthily

Avoid processed foods, reduce the intake of red meat and eat more healthy foods. Remember the old saying, You are what you eat!

Educate yourself, friends and family. Make a significant contribution to the fight against cancer by supporting cancer patients and survivors.
